The copper switch off: Is your business (and IT) ready?

The copper switch off: Is your business (and IT)…

The UK's copper network is being switched off by January 31st 2027.

This might simply sound like a telecoms issue - replacing old phone lines with newer technology, but in reality it's something much bigger. Because once copper lines are eradicated, your phone system will rely entirely on your IT infrastructure.

It's not just a phone upgrade

Traditional systems like analogue and ISDN lines have always been separate from your IT network. They've been predictable, stable, and largely independent. Whereas modern replacements like SIP and VOIP, are different.
They run over your internet connection, that means your:

  • Network
  • Connectivity
  • Wi-Fi
  • Security
  • Overall IT setup

All directly impact your phone system performance, and if your IT isn’t ready, your phones won’t be either.

What this means for your business

Moving away from copper doesn’t just introduce new opportunities, it also introduces new risks if your migration and setup isn't managed properly.

Without the right setup, businesses can experience:

  • Poor call quality or dropped calls
  • Network congestion affecting critical systems
  • Increased downtime during outages
  • Security vulnerabilities
  • Overloaded or underperforming infrastructure

In short: your phones are only as reliable as your IT.

Why many businesses get caught out

Businesses are:

  • Aware the switch-off is coming
  • Looking at replacing phone systems- But not reviewing their IT environment at the same time, and this often leads to solutions that work in theory - but struggle in practice. A new VoIP system on an unprepared network is like is like hiring more staff without expanding your workspace.

What should I be doing now?

To minimise disruption and get the most from your transition, it’s important to consider both your phones and IT together.

     1. Review your current infrastructure - start with your network and connectivity

  •  Is your broadband reliable?
  • Are your speeds good enough?
  • Can your network prioritise traffic?
  • Is your firewall configured correctly?
  1. Identify Dependencies - Many businesses still rely on copper for more than just phones
Do you have the following, and what do they run on?
  • Alarm systems
  • Payment terminals (PDQ machines)
  • Door entry systems
  • Lift lines
These will all need to be reviewed and in many cases - upgraded or replaced.
  1. Plan a proper transition - This isn't just about just replacing like-for-like (in most cases)
It's an opportunity to improve how your business communicates and operates and with the right setup with can benefit from:
  •  Seamless hybrid working
  • Integration with Microsoft Teams and business applications
  • Improved flexibility and scalability
  • Reduced long-term costs

Don’t leave it to late

The deadline may seem distant, but the impact is already happening and being felt nationwide.

As demand increases:

  • Installation lead times are growing
  • Resources are becoming stretched
  • Last-minute fixes are becoming more expensive

Taking action now gives you control and will help you avoid unnecessary disruption.
